Crude compatibility refers to the solubility and stability of blends multiple crude oils. Primarily we are concerned about asphaltene stability, which when precipitated can result in numerous issues for crude transportation and refining. In order to determine the compatibility of two crudes, testing by ASTM D8253 can be completed to determine the solubility parameters for each blend component, and those parameters combined can determine the blend stability. This calculator uses P-values greater than 1.5 as compatible, P-values between 1.2 and 1.5 as potentially compatible, and P-values less than 1.2 as incompatible. See the ASTM Document or check out this CCQTA video for more information.
